Market Update - December 8, 2023
This Market Update is written by our Capital Market specialists each week to bring you insight into what's happening in the market and how it may affect mortgage rates and real estate trends.
Market Commentary:
For the week of Dec 1st – Dec 7th, 30-year and 15-year interest rates decreased.
Mortgage rates dropped for the sixth consecutive week. Market sentiment has significantly shifted over the last month, leading to a continued decline in mortgage rates. The current trajectory of rates is an encouraging development for potential homebuyers, with purchase application activity recently rising to the same level as in mid-September when rates were similar to today’s levels. The modest uptick in demand over the last month signals that there will likely be more competition in a market that remains starved for inventory.
“Slower inflation and financial markets anticipating the potential end of the Fed’s hiking cycle are both behind the recent decline in rates,” says Joel Kan, deputy chief economist at the Mortgage Bankers Association.
Fed Watch: Looking ahead, all eyes are now on the upcoming December 13th Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. According to the CME Group, 2.7% of forecasters predict an increase in interest rates, while 97.3% predict rates will remain the same. None of the forecasters expect rates to decrease.
